A recent study has revealed that approximately 370,000 adults in Ireland have engaged in romantic relationships with AI chatbots. Conducted by Censuswide on behalf of Pure Telecom, the research highlights a growing trend of emotional connections formed through AI.
The study found that 13% of men reported having a romantic relationship with an AI chatbot, compared to 7% of women. Additionally, 20% of respondents believe that romantic relationships with AI could be less complicated than those with humans, suggesting a shift in how relationships are conceptualized in the digital age.
Among those pursuing AI relationships, the age group most involved was 25-34 years old, with 16% indicating they’ve formed such connections. Furthermore, one in ten respondents consider these AI relationships beneficial for practicing skills relevant to real-life interactions.
Beyond romantic ties, the research unveiled that 18% of people utilize AI for health research while 10% employ it for therapy and life advice. Paul Connell, CEO of Pure Telecom, commented on the implications of these findings, noting, “This research highlights the pivotal role that AI is beginning to play not just in our professional lives, but our personal ones as well.”
Connell elaborated that as humanity becomes more integrated with technology and AI gains sophistication, many individuals are discovering bots as a surprising source of emotional connection. He pointed out the advantages of AI, such as instant responses, which can fulfill interpersonal needs without the delays inherent in human interactions.
Although relationships with chatbots may offer certain conveniences, Connell cautioned that AI should not replace the complexity and spontaneity found in human relationships, as they are fundamental to personal fulfillment.
This research not only sheds light on the burgeoning domain of human interaction with AI but also raises important questions about the shifting nature of relationships in an increasingly digital world, and how these interactions may evolve in the future.
