A shocking incident in Shanghai has highlighted the growing threat of AI-related scams, as a man reportedly lost nearly $28,000 after falling victim to a long-distance relationship with an AI-generated girlfriend. This incident, recently reported by Chinese state media, illustrates the complexity and realism that generative artificial intelligence can provide.
The victim, referred to as Mr. Liu, was duped into believing he was in love with a fictional character named “Ms. Jiao,” portrayed with highly realistic video and images created by scammers using advanced AI software. Over time, Liu transferred approximately 200,000 yuan (close to $28,000) to this non-existent partner, who crafted a convincing narrative that she needed financial help to launch a business and address medical bills for a relative.
To bolster their deception, the scammers created not only realistic images but also a fake identity and medical reports, further convincing Liu that his virtual girlfriend was real. A report from state broadcaster CCTV revealed that the operation was executed by a team of scammers adept at using AI-generated content, combining various images and videos to create a seamless and engaging online persona.
Throughout the entire affair, Mr. Liu never met Ms. Jiao in person, underscoring the challenges faced by individuals in recognizing the implications of virtual relationships that are facilitated by technology. CCTV aired footage showcasing the fabricated images of a young woman in various scenarios, reinforcing the illusion crafted by the scammers.
This case exemplifies a broader trend, as the emergence of sophisticated AI tools capable of generating text, images, and even live video has led to a rise in scams. Earlier this month, Meta, a major social media company, issued a warning to users about the increasing prevalence of online scams that leverage generative AI technologies, urging caution when engaging with unfamiliar online acquaintances who might promise romance in exchange for money.
As these technologies evolve, the sophistication of scams is expected to ladder up, emphasizing the urgent need for greater awareness and prevention measures against AI-driven scams.
