The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) presents significant opportunities for economic growth and transformation within the workforce of Asia Pacific. However, a gap exists between the enthusiasm for AI and the skills needed to leverage its potential. While a recent report from AVPN indicates that 58% of people in the region are excited about AI, a stark 15% have received any form of AI training, emphasizing the necessity for initiatives like the Google.org AI Opportunity Fund: Asia-Pacific.
Today, Google.org is introducing 49 social impact organizations that will receive funding from the first phase of the AI Opportunity Fund, chosen through an open call by AVPN and backed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). With a rapidly growing workforce of over 2 billion people, the Asia Pacific region is marked by diversity in language, culture, and economic circumstances. These organizations will deliver localized AI training and resources designed to meet the specific needs of various communities, from solopreneurs in rural India to migrant domestic workers in Singapore, as well as individuals with disabilities and their caregivers in Japan.
The initiatives will focus on practical applications of AI relevant to each local market to ensure effective and meaningful training. This targeted approach aims to address the existing gaps in AI-related workforce development, ensuring that no demographic is left behind. By customizing AI learning experiences, these organizations can help individuals seize the opportunities presented by this transformative technology.
In conjunction with introducing the funding recipients, Google.org is announcing an expansion of the AI Opportunity Fund by an additional $12 million. This new funding aims to support a broader range of workers, small businesses, and nonprofits in utilizing AI within their communities. Out of this amount, $10 million specifically allocated to AVPN will focus on equipping 720,000 workers and 100,000 micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) throughout Asia Pacific.
As the backbone of the region’s economy, MSMEs account for 96% of all companies and employ up to 80% of the workforce. However, many of these enterprises face significant obstacles regarding AI skills development. Common challenges include limited access to training, insufficient digital infrastructure, and constrained financial resources. By addressing these barriers through targeted training and support, the AI Opportunity Fund aims to enhance the capabilities of MSMEs, allowing them to thrive in an increasingly AI-driven marketplace.
In addition to workforce training, the initiative also allocates $2 million to Infoxchange, aiming to provide AI training and tools to 10,000 nonprofits across the Asia Pacific region. These resources will incorporate the recent Gemini features launched in Google for Nonprofits products, empowering organizations to use AI for social good and foster positive transformations within their communities.
The transition toward an AI-powered economy must be equitable, ensuring that all workers are equipped with the knowledge and tools to participate effectively. Through the Google.org AI Opportunity Fund: Asia Pacific and ongoing collaborative efforts, Google is committed to ensuring that every individual can benefit from the immense potential of AI, working toward a future where technology acts as a bridge rather than a barrier.
