Meta has announced the initiation of AI training using public content shared by adults on Facebook and Instagram in the UK. This move aims to ensure that the generative AI models accurately reflect British culture, history, and idiom, thereby facilitating UK companies and institutions in leveraging cutting-edge technology.
Following a pause in training for regulatory compliance, Meta has positively engaged with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). The constructive dialogue has led to clarity regarding the legal basis for utilizing certain first-party data under the framework of ‘Legitimate Interests’ for training generative AI models.
Meta has assured users that private messages and data from individuals under 18 will not be used for AI training purposes. Instead, the company will rely on publicly available information, including posts, comments, and public photos from adult user accounts, to enhance the generative AI models.
Starting next week, adults using Facebook and Instagram in the UK will receive in-app notifications detailing these developments and the implications for their data. Importantly, users will be provided with access to an objection form, allowing them to opt out of having their data used for AI training at any time. Meta emphasizes its commitment to respecting user choices regarding data usage.
In response to feedback from the ICO, Meta has made efforts to improve the simplicity and visibility of the objection form compared to previous implementations. The company is dedicated to honoring all existing and future objection forms from users.
As Meta prepares to launch its generative AI technologies in the UK, the company is focused on ensuring that their development is both responsible and transparent. By engaging with regulatory feedback and prioritizing user consent, Meta aims to build trust while advancing AI technologies that reflect the diverse communities they serve.
