YouTube’s ongoing commitment to transparency regarding generative AI content has led to notable enhancements in its labeling system. In response to consistent feedback from its community, the platform has recognized the importance of clarity for both creators and viewers who engage with AI-generated content.
Since the introduction of AI disclosure labels in 2024, YouTube has now refined its approach by repositioning these labels for greater visibility. For long-form videos, the label will be displayed directly beneath the video player, which is a significant shift aimed at ensuring viewers can access essential information quickly. For shorter content, known as Shorts, the label will appear as an overlay on the video, thereby integrating critical context seamlessly into the viewing experience.
Another major development is the rollout of internal signals designed to assist in the identification of AI-generated content, set to begin in May 2026. While creators will still need to disclose the use of AI in their videos, this new automatic detection feature will apply a label if the system identifies substantial photorealistic AI use without explicit creator input. This advancement not only simplifies the process for creators but also enhances the overall reliability of disclosures.
Despite these innovations, YouTube emphasizes that control rests with creators. If they believe their content has been inaccurately classified as AI-generated, they can adjust the status in YouTube Studio. However, certain conditions will still demand permanent disclosures, such as those involving YouTube’s internal AI tools or content marked with C2PA metadata indicating full generative AI creation.
The intention behind these updates is to maintain a delicate balance between transparency and creator autonomy. Importantly, being labeled as AI-generated will not alter a video’s chances of being recommended or its eligibility for monetization. This highlights YouTube’s adaptive strategy in a rapidly evolving digital landscape, aiming to facilitate informed interactions between creators and viewers as AI continues to influence content creation.
