Example

To explain this in a practical context, let’s take this example. Let’s say you’re driving home after work. This journey involves a lot of subconscious processes like shifting gears, pressing the brakes, and so on. While driving, you’re also aware of various things in your vicinity – the traffic lights, other cars, pedestrians, etc.

Now, imagine a song comes on the radio, one from your high school days that you loved. You start singing along, memories from those times start flooding back. You start feeling happy, nostalgic, and even a little sad. All the while, you’re still driving, responding to the traffic and obstacles on the road.

This is consciousness in action. You are consciously focusing on the song and the memories it brings while subconsciously driving your car. You are aware of your emotions triggered by the song, the memory attached to it, and the tasks needed to reach home safely, all at the same time. Being conscious allows you to perform complex tasks while experiencing a wide range of feelings, thoughts, and sensations.
