In an innovative step towards enhancing user experience, Google has introduced a feature within AI Mode that allows the chatbot to analyze personal information from Gmail and Google Photos. Launched as part of a wider update for Gemini AI, the newly branded “Personal Intelligence” concept aims to refine search results by tailoring them to individual interests and behaviors.

This personalization feature suggests various applications, such as travel itinerary recommendations that could leverage hotel bookings found in Gmail, coupled with a user’s holiday photos from Google Photos. For instance, if a user frequently uploads selfies with ice cream, AI Mode might highlight recommendations for popular ice cream parlors nearby. Furthermore, when shopping online, it can prioritize products from brands that a user has previously purchased or expressed interest in.

As of now, eligible customers holding Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscriptions can choose to link their Gmail and Google Photos accounts with AI Mode. This feature is currently rolling out in the US and is designated for personal Google accounts only. The implementation of this update follows the prior introduction of Personal Intelligence to Gemini AI, which also utilizes historical data from Search and YouTube alongside Gmail and Photos.

With privacy considerations at the forefront, Google Search VP Robby Stein emphasized that AI Mode employs its most sophisticated model, Gemini 3, while ensuring that direct training on user Gmail inboxes or Photos libraries is avoided. Instead, personalization is achieved through limited datasets, focusing on specific user prompts and responses to refine functionalities over time.

However, Google does acknowledge the potential for inaccuracies, as confirmed by internal testing. Users can provide corrective feedback by rating undesired recommendations, indicating the responsiveness of the AI Mode to user input.
