Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, is now accessible to all users on X, marking a significant transition from its previous exclusivity to Premium subscribers. Observations from users on Friday highlighted this change, which permits non-Premium users to send up to 10 messages to Grok every two hours.
Initially launched as a “humorous AI assistant” by xAI last year, Grok was only available for those paying for the Premium subscription. The introduction of an innovative text-to-image generation feature in August allowed users to create images, albeit with some outcomes described as questionable by observers.
Recent reports from TechCrunch indicate that xAI began testing a free version of Grok in various regions last month, paving the way for its wider release. This broader availability is likely a strategic move to bolster Grok’s competition with other free chatbots, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Anthropic’s Claude.
With xAI having raised a staggering $6 billion in its latest funding round, there are also considerations for launching a standalone application dedicated to Grok. This potential app aligns with current trends, as existing competitors like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude have already introduced their independent platforms.
