The ongoing debate surrounding H-1B visas and Indian immigrants in the United States has gained significant attention, particularly in light of the evolving political landscape. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, a prominent supporter of President-elect Donald Trump’s efforts, argues that foreign workers are essential for the success of tech enterprises like SpaceX and Tesla. Musk, alongside Indian-American entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, has been appointed by Trump to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
However, Aravind Srinivas, founder of Perplexity AI and former employee of DeepMind, Google, and OpenAI, contends that the current focus on H-1B visas is misdirected. In an interview with the Economic Times, he stated: “Clearly, it surprised everybody online and it’s not exactly data driven—the claims that the H-1B or Indian immigrants are taking away the jobs of laid-off American tech workers.” Srinivas highlights that Indian nationals are also facing layoffs and asserts that addressing illegal immigration should take precedence over the H-1B debate.
Srinivas pointed out that the layoffs experienced by various individuals in the tech sector are not primarily due to H-1B holders taking jobs. He emphasized the need for a closer look at the data, stating, “People getting laid off are not necessarily all engineers. If people actually took a look at the data and saw it for themselves, they wouldn’t be this angry.” According to him, illegal immigration presents a far greater challenge, underscoring the necessity for government intervention.
The H-1B visa discourse has reportedly divided Trump’s supporters into two factions: those in favor of H-1B visas and those vehemently opposing them. Supporters like Musk and Ramaswamy advocate for their significance in the tech industry, while others voice discontent for various reasons.
In his comments, Srinivas also defended Sriram Krishnan, a political figure slated to serve as an AI policy advisor, against critics who have targeted him due to his own history of supporting H-1B visas. He condemned the unfair criticism directed at Krishnan and expressed optimism that scrutiny based on data would quell the controversy surrounding him.
Recently, Srinivas had the opportunity to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during which they discussed the profound potential for AI adoption within India and globally. Srinivas shared his experiences on Twitter: “Had the honour to meet Prime Minister @narendramodi ji. We had a great conversation about the potential for AI adoption in India and across the world. Really inspired by Modi Ji’s dedication to staying updated on the topic and his remarkable vision for the future.” In response, Modi expressed his encouragement and appreciation for Srinivas’s work at Perplexity AI.
