The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) has announced a significant donation of €5 million from Canadian philanthropist Garrett Camp, a move aimed at promoting artificial intelligence (AI) as a reliable, human-centered technology that ultimately benefits society. This funding is strategically aligned with ISTA’s strong emphasis on responsible AI, robust research, and an interdisciplinary approach, making the institute exceptionally well-equipped to pursue this advancement.

On January 13, during his visit to the ISTA campus, Camp formalized the donation agreement with ISTA President Martin Hetzer and Managing Director Georg Schneider. Hetzer remarked, “With this generous gift, ISTA can further build upon fundamental research in artificial intelligence, drawing on our strengths in computer science, mathematics, and the natural sciences.” He recognized the donation as a catalyst for research that not only explores AI systems comprehensively but also seeks to address their current limitations for better societal integration.

Camp’s commitment to supporting rigorous and collaborative approaches to AI development reflects his belief that the next generation of breakthroughs will stem from environments that prioritize sustainable and trustworthy innovation over fast-paced advancements. He emphasized the necessity for global collaboration by stating, “Global solutions demand global perspectives and collaboration.” This perspective reinforces the importance of cultivating a community that connects diverse talents focused on advancing AI aligned with human values.

Notably, this donation marks Camp’s first contribution to a European research institution, showcasing his interest in funding projects that focus on responsible and trustworthy AI technology. Niklas Schmidt from Wolf Theiss Attorneys-at-Law highlighted the donation as an acknowledgment of the excellence present within the Austrian research landscape.

ISTA’s multifaceted work in AI encompasses projects that focus on creating reliable and scientifically rigorous AI systems. With researchers like Christoph Lampert, the institution prioritizes principled solutions over mere bug fixes, aiming to enhance AI’s safety and robustness while ensuring data privacy. Furthermore, Dan Alistar’s research on sustainable AI looks to enhance resource efficiency in AI models, while Francesco Locatello’s team investigates causal AI to enable systems to learn effectively about cause-and-effect dynamics.

Integrating AI with other scientific fields, ISTA’s research spans various topics, including the training of models that respect privacy and methodologies for leveraging extensive datasets. With the additional funding, ISTA researchers such as Krishnendu Chatterjee and Thomas Henzinger are expected to continue contributing significantly to AI research that meets both scientific and societal needs. As Hetzer expressed, this donation is a testament to ISTA’s mission and its continual role in shaping the future of AI research.
