The Vital Role of a Free Press
On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, stressed that a free press is vital for understanding the world and fostering critical thinking, particularly amidst crises such as conflict, climate change, and societal divisions. He asserted that without free media, the public remains vulnerable to disinformation, which is rampant worldwide.
Threats to Journalists
Türk expressed grave concerns regarding the safety of journalists, as press freedom faces unprecedented threats globally. Since January of this year alone, at least 20 journalists have lost their lives in the line of duty, highlighting the impunity often enjoyed by those who harm media workers. He called attention to the harsh realities faced by journalists, including harassment, detention, torture, and outright assassination.
AI’s Impact on Journalism
The intersection of artificial intelligence and journalism presents both opportunities and dangers. Türk pointed out that while AI can assist journalists in their work, it also represents a significant threat to press freedom. Moreover, governments increasingly employ AI tools to monitor journalists and their sources, violating the fundamental right to privacy and chilling press freedom. Türk noted that women journalists are often disproportionately targeted, exacerbating existing inequities in media representation and safety.
Concentration of Power in the Media Landscape
A troubling aspect of this new media landscape is the concentration of power in the hands of a few corporations and individuals who dominate AI technologies. Türk emphasized that this concentration could stifle independent journalism and lead to a less diverse media environment.
Call for Change
In his address, Secretary-General António Guterres echoed Türk’s sentiments, noting the complexities introduced by biased algorithms and misinformation. He underscored the need for a global commitment to information integrity and respect in digital spaces, as outlined in the Global Digital Compact adopted by UN Member States.
Actions Required by States and Tech Companies
The UN officials called on states to ensure journalist safety against attacks and harassment, to improve transparency regarding data use and algorithm design, and to modernize media ownership laws in light of AI’s ascendance. Tech companies are urged to adopt frameworks that assess the risks their technologies pose to journalists and society.

Türk concluded that a free and diverse media holds the potential to heal societal divides, and it is imperative to protect it against threats from censorship and AI. The global community must act decisively to preserve press freedom and ensure its flourishing amid evolving challenges.
