Particle Launches AI News App for Publishers

As the media industry grapples with artificial intelligence’s growing influence, a new startup named Particle is emerging with a clear mission: to assist rather than exploit publishers. Founded by former Twitter engineers, including Sara Beykpour and Marcel Molina, Particle has recently launched an AI news app designed to help consumers digest news while ensuring that publishers are compensated and credited for their work.

The concept springs from a mounting skepticism within the media sector towards AI, particularly due to incidents where AI technologies have replaced reporters or misappropriated journalistic content. However, Particle seeks to turn that narrative on its head by utilizing AI to create a more informed readership and support the sustainability of news outlets, rather than emptying their coffers.

Backed by substantial funding—$4.4 million in seed funding and a $10.9 million Series A round led by Lightspeed—Particle promises to direct traffic back to publishers by providing direct links beneath its AI-generated summaries. This strategy not only enhances user engagement but emphasizes the importance of original reporting sources.

Initially, Particle has paired with notable publishers such as Reuters, AFP, and Fortune, allowing them to host content within the app, thereby prioritizing and showcasing their links prominently. Initial beta tests have shown positive engagement metrics, with reports of increased clicks to publishers’ sites attributable to the app’s user-friendly interface and design.

One of the standout features of Particle is its innovative use of AI to enhance the news consumption experience. The app goes beyond providing simple summaries; it offers different modes, such as “Explain Like I’m 5,” providing simplified explanations for intricate topics, and a capability to deliver news in various languages. Users may also receive audio summaries or personalized content, enhancing accessibility.

More intriguingly, Particle aims to challenge user biases through a feature called “Opposite Sides,” which presents multiple viewpoints on a story, thereby broadening readers’ perspectives. By visually indicating how stories are reported across different political biases, the app encourages critical thinking and informed discourse. Furthermore, it pairs this feature with a robust AI chatbot that answers user inquiries about current events, tapping into a wealth of information and fact-checking them to ensure accuracy.

As the app integrates advanced technologies, including OpenAI’s models, Particle implements meticulous processing pipelines to curate relevant content, effectively minimizing inaccuracies that can arise in AI outputs. As it scales, human editors will also play a role in managing and refining AI-generated content, ensuring quality and relevance remain top priorities.

Currently available on iOS, Particle is positioned to reshape how readers engage with the news while nurturing the publisher ecosystem, offering a fresh perspective on the potential of AI in journalism.
