On January 22, 2026, PayPal Holdings announced its acquisition of Cymbio, an Israeli company based in Tel Aviv that specializes in multi-channel orchestration services tailored for e-commerce and agentic commerce environments. This significant move is expected to bolster PayPal’s agentic commerce capabilities, facilitating a smoother expansion of services to its merchant partners.

According to Michelle Gill, PayPal’s executive vice president and general manager of small business and financial services, “Acquiring Cymbio’s technology and team will enhance our agentic commerce capabilities and accelerate the expansion to more of our merchants.” The financial specifics of the deal remain undisclosed, with PayPal stating that they would not reveal the acquisition price. The deal is anticipated to be finalized in the first half of 2026.

PayPal’s purchase of Cymbio aligns with its broader strategy to delve into AI-driven agentic commerce. In recent months, PayPal has been actively pursuing the development of platforms that allow consumers to employ automated bots for shopping and payment transactions. This emerging technology, still in its developmental phases, has sparked a competitive race among companies to establish their presence in this innovative marketplace.

Before the acquisition, PayPal had already collaborated with Cymbio in October 2025 to introduce AI-enabled agentic shopping services for its merchant clients. This partnership aimed to enhance consumer access to a new commerce ecosystem. At that time, PayPal emphasized its commitment to this initiative as part of a “first wave” of agentic tools focusing on buyer protection and identity verification.

Founded in 2015, Cymbio has contributed to the support of PayPal’s Store Sync service, which enables merchants to integrate their product offerings within AI channels. This functionality also streamlines the order management process, shifting customer orders directly into their fulfillment systems.

Additionally, PayPal has aligned with Mastercard to advance agentic shopping options, ensuring synergy between PayPal’s digital wallet and Mastercard’s card services. Already, the digital payments pioneer offers some agentic commerce solutions, including checkout options integrated with platforms such as Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity. Plans are in place to broaden these services to include major applications such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini soon, further signaling the potential evolution of digital commerce.
