Focus Features has secured worldwide distribution rights for the anticipated thriller “Hot Spot,” directed by Agnieszka Smoczyńska, who previously collaborated with the studio on the acclaimed film “The Silent Twins.” This new project, which recently wrapped production in Greece on November 22, delves into a near-future society where sentient AI governs human life.

The film’s narrative centers around a private investigator who uncovers a rebel faction capable of challenging the omnipotent digital overlord while probing a murder case. Notable BAFTA nominee Noomi Rapace leads the cast alongside Andrzej Konopka and Reika Kirishima. The story is penned by Robert Bolesto, a frequent writing partner of Smoczyńska.

Produced by Madants, the film boasts the talents of Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska and Bogna Szewczyk-Skupień, with a mix of co-producers including Amanda Livanou of Neda Film and Kristina Börjeson from Film i Väst. Focus Features’ Michelle Momplaisir is overseeing the project for the distribution powerhouse.

Kiska Higgs, president of production and acquisitions at Focus Features, extolled Smoczyńska’s visionary storytelling, emphasizing her ability to craft films that are visually captivating and thematically relevant to contemporary societal issues. Higgs remarked on the importance of Smoczyńska’s exploration of technology and its implications on human relationships.

In her comments, Smoczyńska expressed her gratitude for the collaboration with Focus Features and articulated her aspiration to create an immersive experience that connects the current realities of advanced technology with deeper emotional themes, such as love intertwined with fear.

Beyond “Hot Spot,” Focus Features boasts an impressive slate of upcoming films, including Edward Berger’s “Conclave” featuring Ralph Fiennes, as well as Yorgos Lanthimos’s “Bugonia” with Emma Stone, highlighting their commitment to innovative cinema.
