A vision for technology success during the next four years
As we usher in a New Year, we simultaneously welcome a new president into the White House and a golden opportunity for American technology and economic competitiveness. Not since the invention of electricity has the United States had such an opportunity to harness new technology to invigorate the nation’s economy. Artificial intelligence (AI) resembles the electricity of our age, and the next four years could set the stage for America’s economic vitality for the next quarter-century.
At Microsoft, we envision America’s technological success as a tripartite endeavor involving significant investments in world-leading AI technologies, the promotion of AI skill-building initiatives, and a commitment to exporting American AI innovations to allies. By focusing on these spheres, the U.S. can strengthen its domestic economy while helping others benefit from advancements in AI.
This ambition should build on foundational ideas set during President Trump’s initial term. Achieving it will necessitate a collaboration that unites government, the private sector, and educational and non-profit institutions. Microsoft is enthusiastic about being part of this transformative journey.
Throughout history, major technological advancements have propelled significant economic growth, often linked to what economists call General-Purpose Technologies (GPTs). The first industrial revolution, ignited by steam engines, propelled vast economic progress, while the electrification of the late 1800s established the United States as a global economic powerhouse. The advent of computer technology in the late 20th century situated America at the forefront of yet another technological revolution.
AI is positioned to be a world-changing GPT with the potential to enhance innovation and productivity across all sectors. America’s privileged position stems from a vibrant private sector backed by innovation from companies of all sizes, from start-ups to established enterprises.
In FY 2025, Microsoft plans to invest around $80 billion to develop AI-enabled data centers, reinforcing our commitment to the U.S. economy. Achieving success relies on a robust technology ecosystem nurtured by open-source development and extensive infrastructure investment.
The need for effective skilling initiatives is urgent. AI is transforming the labor landscape, replicating earlier industrial revolutions where technical training was vital. AI can disrupt and reshape various industries, but it also holds promise for new opportunities to emerge, with the potential to enhance productivity and economic growth.
The focus must shift towards developing a national AI talent strategy that resonates with people of all demographics, allowing them to acquire relevant skills necessary for advancement. Microsoft is committed to training 2.5 million individuals in AI skills in 2025 alone, working closely with community colleges to enhance educational access.
Promoting the export of American AI technology is paramount. In light of China’s rapid advancements in AI, a proactive approach to showcase American technological superiority while ensuring security and competitive advantage is essential. The embrace of effective international partnerships will not only help solidify America’s leading role in AI but also enhance global trust in American products.
America’s technological foundation is solid, fueled by a robust private sector adept at innovation. By prioritizing collaborative efforts combining government policy with educational initiatives, the country can maintain its leadership in AI technology while ensuring broad access for its citizens. Together, we can harness AI’s transformative power for sustainable economic growth and prosperity, setting a hopeful path forward.
