AI-Enhanced Heart Failure Diagnosis

AI and Heart Failure Diagnosis: Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the early diagnosis of heart failure by identifying anomalies that traditional methods miss. Researchers at the University of Dundee’s School of Medicine, leveraging data from the Scottish Health Research Register and Biobank (SHARE), studied 578 individuals to explore AI’s capabilities. Their findings, published in ESC Heart Failure, reveal that AI can sift through electronic health records and echocardiography scans to pinpoint patients at risk. The AI-enhanced echocardiography provided more detailed measurements of heart structure and function, which are not typically reported in routine scans. This advancement in deep learning interpretation of heart scans could significantly improve the efficiency of patient selection for clinical trials and enhance heart failure surveillance and early diagnosis across hospital systems. Heart failure, a condition where the heart can’t pump blood effectively, is often under-diagnosed despite being a major global killer. While it can be managed to some extent, it generally worsens over time. The research by Professor Chim Lang and his team demonstrates AI’s potential to benefit patients by analyzing vast amounts of data to detect structural and functional heart anomalies.
