South Korea is embarking on an ambitious journey to establish the world’s largest AI data centre by capacity, signaling its intent to achieve global technological leadership. This monumental initiative, led by Fir Hills, a division of California-based Stock Farm Road, Inc (SFR), is set to commence construction in winter 2025, with aspirations to generate an impressive initial annual revenue of $3.5 billion.
Located in the Jeollanam-do Province, this project is a result of strategic collaboration amongst seasoned innovators, including LG heir Brian Koo and Dr. Amin Badr-El-Din. Dr. Badr-El-Din expressed that this initiative represents not just a technological milestone but a significant leap toward strengthening Korea’s position on the global tech stage. The project, initially valued at over $10 billion, has the potential to expand to $35 billion and, when completed in 2028, will feature a remarkable 3-gigawatt capacity, intending to be the largest AI data facility worldwide.
The data centre is designed to meet the sophisticated demands of advanced AI, equipped with a cutting-edge cooling system, enhanced fiber bandwidth for both regional and global connectivity, and the robust capability to handle substantial and sudden energy fluctuations. Beyond promoting AI innovation, this development promises significant economic benefits for South Korea, positioning it prominently in the rapidly expanding data centre services market projected to reach $438.3 billion by 2030.
With an expected creation of over 10,000 jobs across various sectors—ranging from energy supply and storage to R&D—the initiative is poised to deliver major economic advantages to the Jeollanam-do Province and beyond. This data centre will cater to the requirements of numerous large corporations, including hyperscalers and developers.
The Jeollanam-do data centre is merely the precursor to a broader strategy from SFR, which aims to forge AI infrastructure partnerships across Asia, Europe, and the US within the upcoming 18 months. Their expertise in transforming conventional energy structures into advanced AI platforms indicates a robust commitment to intelligent infrastructure development.
Over the past decade, South Korea has evolved into a technological powerhouse, led by companies like Samsung, LG, and Hyundai. The initiative to construct the massive AI data centre serves as testament to the effectiveness of strategic public-private partnerships, which can drive monumental innovations. With this colossal infrastructure project, South Korea is set to further push its ambitions towards initiating a digital industrial revolution.
